UT PGE undergraduates are recruited and hired by top energy companies for internships and full-time positions. Internships allow students to put theory to practice with hands-on projects in industry. Students are taken out of the classroom environment and go into the field at locations across the country, including: Houston, Denver and Prudhoe Bay, Alaska for a rewarding and educational summer experience. Internships are one of the best avenues for students to obtain full-time positions once they graduate.

Resources for Obtaining a Job or Internship

UT PGE students have a great resource at their fingertips to help secure an internship or job. The Engineering Career Assistance Center (ECAC) housed in the Engineering school provides career expositions, mock interviews, personal career advising, resume critique, and other services to assist current students.

The interdisciplinary geosystems program gives you access to not only ECAC, but also the career center housed in the Jackson School of Geosciences. Students can maximize their opportunities by attending both career fairs and networking opportunities provided in both schools.

Another terrific resource for obtaining a job or internship is through PGE’s student organizations. The department has several for undergraduates, including: Society of Petroleum Engineers, (SPE) and American Association of Drilling Engineers (AADE). The groups provide opportunities for students to network with company recruiters at tailgates, “Fridays in the Park,” and their general meetings.

Students looking to help promote themselves to industry can showcase their resume and Linked-In profile on Hire a UT PE. This is a database, where alumni and recruiters go to find interns or full-time hires. Please send the required materials for posting to the dedicated Hire A UT PE email address. 

Career Options for Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering Majors

With a degree in petroleum engineering, students can choose to specialize in drilling, production, or reservoir engineering after starting their careers in industry. Rotational programs are also offered by different oil and gas companies in order to familiarize students with all specializations before making a choice.

Students with a degree in geosystems are recruited by oil and gas companies as well as environmentally based companies who are seeking engineers.
