Tuition and Funding
All admitted students are considered for any available fellowships and/or assistantships. Fellowships and research assistantships, including monthly stipends, tuition and fees, and health insurance benefits, are provided to qualified candidates.
Financial Support
Once admitted, the Graduate Admissions Committee considers departmental fellowships on scholarly achievements or other criteria such as country of origin. This is an automatic process — please do not contact the Graduate Office regarding possible fellowships.
As a next step, admitted applications are automatically forwarded to all faculty in the department. The faculty reviews each application to identify highly qualified individuals that they may want to hire for research assistantships or possible teaching assistantships. Each faculty member makes their own determinations based on candidate qualifications and their available financial resources and projects.
Financial aid is available for students who need additional financial support beyond fellowships or assistantships.
Graduate students at The University of Texas at Austin may apply for federal, state and institutional financial aid programs administered by the Office of Financial Aid by completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). More information about financial aid opportunities can be found on the Graduate School website.
Fulbright Scholarships
UT Austin welcomes Fulbright scholars, and International students applying to the program should consider applying for Fulbright scholarships. Note that whether or not this opportunity exists depends on the country of origin, and the Fulbright application process is not managed by UT Austin.
Fellowship Opportunities
More than half of our graduate students have fellowships through the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, The University of Texas at Austin or other organizations.
All admitted doctoral applicants are nominated for institutional recruitment fellowships through the Graduate School and the Cockrell School of Engineering. Selected applicants receive notification of these awards in the spring. Applicants do not apply to these awards directly; rather, the admissions committee coordinates nominations for the awards.
The UT Austin Graduate School provides more information on recruitment fellowships and externally funded fellowships.
