Undergraduate Career Resources
UT PGE undergraduates are recruited and hired by top energy companies for internships and full-time positions. Internships allow students to put theory into practice with hands-on projects in industry. Students are taken out of the classroom environment and go into the field at locations across the country, including Houston, Denver and Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, for a rewarding and educational summer experience. Internships are one of the best avenues for students to obtain full-time positions once they graduate.
Resources for Obtaining a Job or Internship
College Career Resources
Engineering Career Assistance Center (ECAC): UT PGE students have a great resource at their fingertips to help secure an internship or job. The Cockrell School of Engineering’s ECAC office provides career expositions, mock interviews, personal career advising, resume critique, job fairs and other services to assist current students.
Career Center (GE only): The interdisciplinary geosystems program gives you access to not only ECAC but also the Jackson School of Geosciences’ Career Center. Students can maximize their opportunities by attending both career fairs and networking opportunities provided in both schools.
Department Career Resources
Student Organizations: Another terrific resource for obtaining a job or internship is through PGE’s student organizations. The department has several for undergraduates, including the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and the American Association of Drilling Engineers (AADE). The groups provide opportunities for students to network with company recruiters at tailgates, “Fridays in the Park,” and their general meetings.
Hire a UT PGE: Students looking to help promote themselves to the industry can showcase their resume and LinkedIn profile on Hire a UT PGE. This is a database where alumni and recruiters go to find interns or full-time hires. Please send the required materials for posting to hireautpe@utexas.edu.
Career Options for PGE Majors
With a degree in petroleum engineering, students can choose to specialize in drilling, production, or reservoir engineering after starting their careers in industry. Rotational programs are also offered by different oil and gas companies in order to familiarize students with all specializations before making a choice.
Students with a degree in geosystems are recruited by oil and gas companies as well as environmentally based companies who are seeking engineers.
Engineering Career Assistance Center (ECAC)
In the Engineering Career Assistance Center (ECAC), students are guided through the recruitment process with career counseling and workshops to help develop resumes, interviewing and job-search skills. Throughout the year, ECAC hosts employers and recruiters for student interviews, career fairs and information sessions. During their academic careers at UT, students have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience through externships, co-ops and internship positions to help prepare them for full-time employment after graduation.
