Kenneth Gray is a professor emeritus in the Hildebrand Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering. His academic and research career has focused on drilling, well completion, reservoir engineering and unconventional resources.

Gray is recognized for his long-standing contributions to the field of petroleum engineering. He founded a research center and conducted pioneering research on bit tooth impact mechanics under pressure and three-dimensional rock behavior under three-dimensional stresses, developed techniques for simultaneous measurement of rock properties for variable stress paths, designed core bits for the Apollo Space Program and pioneered the concept of Dynamic Density Control for improving HSE footprints of land and water drilling rigs.
