Vision and Mission

Vision

The Hildebrand Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering (UT PGE) at The University of Texas at Austin will shape the world’s energy future through innovative education and research in sustainable subsurface energy production and storage.

Mission

UT PGE will recruit, retain and inspire an interdisciplinary, diverse and collaborative faculty that will perform groundbreaking scientific research and educate the next generation of engineers and scientists with the goal of providing sustainable, affordable and essential hydrocarbons to the planet while contributing to a smooth energy transition. To achieve this goal, we will actively recruit a diverse team of innovative faculty, dedicated staff and aspiring students; secure sustainable research funding; adapt our educational practices to a changing world; and engage and collaborate with our industry, policy and public stakeholders.

Actively recruit a diverse team:

  • Collaborate with peer departments
  • Actively search and solicit exceptional candidates
  • Disseminate information through campus visits and digital media tools

Secure sustainable research funding:

  • Form interdisciplinary and collaborative teams
  • Identify research problems by engaging industry partners and federal agencies
  • Seek a variety of funding sources, including creating interdisciplinary alliances with major energy companies

Adapt our educational practices to a changing world:

  • Create electives and course content on tight and shale reservoirs
  • Prepare students for industry digital transformation
  • Facilitate energy expansion by engaging with industry partners
  • Emphasize professional skills, including oral and written communication
  • Inspire faculty to build a synergistic, holistic and integrated curriculum
  • Develop a dual degree with the McCombs School of Business
