Produced water is one of the largest waste streams generated by the oil and gas industry, with more than 90% of U.S. produced water managed through subsurface injection. This disposal-centric approach creates challenges related to cost, induced seismicity, well integrity, and long-term environmental management, while oil and gas development continues to increase freshwater demands. At the same time, produced water contains potentially valuable resources, including magnesium and lithium, and offers opportunities for water reuse, hydrogen production, and carbon mineralization. This seminar will examine the limitations of treating these opportunities as separate processes and introduce a proposed modular platform integrating produced-water characterization and pretreatment, critical-mineral recovery, water purification and reuse, hydrogen production, flare-gas utilization, and Mg–CO₂ mineralization.
About Jawad Ali Khan
Jawad Ali Khan is a petroleum engineer, researcher and energy technology leader with over a decade of experience in reservoir management, production optimization, artificial lift, well integrity and sustainable energy systems. He holds a Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering from the University of North Dakota, with expertise spanning reservoir engineering, field development, workover operations, data analytics, artificial intelligence, digital engineering and strategic planning.
As Chief Executive Officer, Khan leads innovative engineering and digital solutions for complex energy and environmental challenges. He developed LiftIQ, a physics-based engineering software platform for the oil and gas industry, and his current work includes produced-water treatment and sustainable water management. He collaborates with national and multinational energy companies, government agencies and technical partners across the United States, Oman and Saudi Arabia.
Khan is an active SPE professional, international conference speaker, technical session judge and reviewer for international journals. He has received the SPE North America Regional Award and recognition from SPE International leadership and the SPE Board of Directors for his leadership and contributions to the petroleum engineering community.
