The University of Texas at Austin Center for Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering (CPGE) appointed Hildebrand Department professor Matthew Balhoff to director. His appointment, which began on January 8, 2020, succeeds the center’s previous director Dr. Kishore Mohanty.

As the research center most closely affiliated with the Hildebrand Department, CPGE conducts $10 million annually in innovative faculty and student research through nine major sponsored areas with more than 50 corporate partners and several key federal and state funding agencies. The mission of CPGE is to encourage and develop interdisciplinary research in petroleum and geosystems engineering as well as other areas related to energy and the environment, provide educational opportunities for graduate students, deliver an organizational structure for funding new areas of research, and conduct meetings on research topics providing a mechanism for technology transfer.

I am excited to begin my new role as director of CPGE to make the organization the world’s leading academic center for energy research,” said Balhoff. “Two of my main goals are to create sustainable research funding especially for junior faculty and new IAPs, and improve the visibility and career development for postdocs and research staff.”

Balhoff, who holds the Bank of America Centennial Professorship in Petroleum Engineering, joined the Hildebrand Department and CPGE in 2007. He earned his B.S. and Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Louisiana State University. Balhoff is a Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Distinguished Member, which acknowledges engineers who have attained eminence in the petroleum industry or the academic community, or who have made significant contributions to SPE.
