The Hildebrand Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering (UT PGE) ranked first in the 2023 World University Rankings by Subject compiled by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), the leading provider of analytics to the global higher education sector. Stanford University ranked 2nd and Texas A&M University ranked 3rd.

The QS subject rankings feature 1,500 institutions across 54 different subjects and are compiled annually to help prospective students identify the leading universities in a particular subject. The methodology uses five performance indicators: academic reputation (40%); employer reputation (30%); citations per paper/publication (10%); H-Index, which measures both the productivity and impact of an academic or department at a university (10%); and international research network, which reflects the ability of institutions to diversify the geography of their international research network by establishing sustainable research partnerships with other higher education institutions (10%).

UT PGE has been second in the QS subject rankings since petroleum engineering programs were included beginning in 2020. This year marks the first year the department has earned the top spot. This is also the first year that three American universities have earned the top three spots.

“As the only petroleum engineering department in the country to consistently appear among QS’s top programs, we are pleased to be at the forefront of our industry and the world’s higher education community,” says department Chair and Professor Jon E. Olson. “Our faculty continue doing some of the most innovative and cutting-edge research, all while also preparing the next generation of subsurface engineers to ensure a sustainable energy future.”

The department's graduate and undergraduate petroleum engineering programs are also ranked No. 1 by U.S. News & World Report.
