For the second year in a row, The University of Texas at Austin’s Hildebrand Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering (UT PGE) has topped the World University Rankings by Subject compiled by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS).

In the 2024 petroleum engineering rankings, Stanford University was 2nd and Texas A&M University tied with Technical University of Denmark for 3rd. QS, the world’s leading provider of analytics to the global higher education sector, releases university and subject rankings every April.

The 2024 QS subject rankings feature 1,500+ institutions across 55 different subjects. The QS methodology uses five performance indicators: academic reputation (40%); employer reputation (30%); citations per paper/publication (10%); H-Index, which measures both the productivity and impact of an academic or department at a university (10%); and international research network, which reflects the ability of institutions to diversify the geography of their international research network by establishing sustainable research partnerships with other higher education institutions (10%).

UT PGE debuted at 2nd in the rankings when QS began including petroleum engineering programs in 2020. The department maintained that position until taking over the top spot in 2023.

“We are pleased once again to be named the best among the world’s higher education petroleum engineering community,” says UT PGE Chair and Professor Matthew T. Balhoff. “As we make progress toward our vision to shape the world’s energy future through innovative education and research in sustainable subsurface energy production and storage, I am honored to work with the amazing students, faculty and staff who make such recognition possible.”
