For the second year in a row, The University of Texas at Austin’s PetroBowl Team has won the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) North American Regional Competition.

UT PGE's undefeated 2024 PetroBowl team

The 2024 team is made up of Hildebrand Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering students Karem Algaradi (PhD PE 2028), Isaac Aliwewe (BSPE 2025), Deena Elhossary (PhD PE 2026), Dany Hachem (PhD PE 2024), Ahmed Merzoug (PhD PE 2027), Misael Morales (PhD PE 2025) and Nadia Mouedden (PhD PE 2027).

The UT PetroBowl team went undefeated in a pool that included the University of Oklahoma, Texas A&M University and the University of Houston. The team bested the Colorado School of Mines in the quarterfinals, Pennsylvania State University in the semifinals and the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in the final round. With the win, the UT Austin team earned a spot to compete at the PetroBowl world finals later this year in New Orleans.

“I’m graduating with my PhD this spring, so this was my last PetroBowl competition as part of the UT team,” says Hachem. “I’ve learned so much about the oil and gas industry, its history and economic impact, and the scientists and engineers who have been a part of it all. Everything I’ve learned as a part of PetroBowl complements my academic studies and research interests, and has given me deeper insight into the energy industry as a whole.”

“It’s been such a rewarding and interesting experience,” agrees Mouedden. “Not only have I learned so much, but I’ve met energy engineers from universities and companies all over the world. I have no doubt that being part of PetroBowl and making these connections will benefit me in my future studies and career.”
